Why Most Bright Stars are Binary But Most Dim Stars Are Single: A Simple Qualitative Explanation

چکیده
It is known that most visible stars are binary: they have a nearby companion star, and these two stars orbit around each other. Based on this fact, until recently, astronomers believed that, in general, most stars are binary. A few years ago, a surprising paper showed that while most bright stars are indeed binary, most dim stars are single. In this paper, we provide a simple qualitative explanation for this empirical fact. 1 Why Most Bright Stars are Binary But Most Dim Stars Are Single: An Empirical Fact That Needs to Be Explained Most visible stars are binary stars: an empirical fact. Since the 18th century, it has been known that many visible stars are binary. As the resolution of the astronomical instruments increased, more and more visible stars turned out to have star companions. At present, it is estimated that 75-80% of visible stars are binary stars; see, e.g., [1]. From this viewpoint, our Sun is an exception. Resulting conjecture: most stars are binary. Since most visible stars are binary, astronomers naturally concluded that in general, most stars are binary. This conclusion led to pessimistic estimates for the number of planets: it is very difficult for a binary star to have a stable planetary orbit, so the natural conclusion was that most stars do not have planets. Recent observation: most stars are single. Surprisingly, it turns out that most stars are single. This does not contradict to the fact that most visible stars are binary. Indeed, for a star to be visible to a naked eye at a large distance, this

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملX-ray Novae and the Evidence for Black Hole Event Horizons
We discuss new observations of X-ray novae which provide strong evidence that black holes have event horizons. Optical observations of 13 X-ray novae indicate that these binary stars contain collapsed objects too heavy to be stable neutron stars. The objects have been identified as black hole candidates. X-ray observations of several of these Xray novae in quiescence with the Chandra X-ray Obse...
متن کاملA Fast Algorithm for Covering Rectangular Orthogonal Polygons with a Minimum Number of r-Stars
Introduction This paper presents an algorithm for covering orthogonal polygons with minimal number of guards. This idea examines the minimum number of guards for orthogonal simple polygons (without holes) for all scenarios and can also find a rectangular area for each guards. We consider the problem of covering orthogonal polygons with a minimum number of r-stars. In each orthogonal polygon P,...

Most stars in our Galaxy with photospheric C/O > 1 (carbon stars) are not giants but dwarfs. The newly-recognized class of dwarf carbon stars joins the growing family of stars with peculiar abundances that are now recognized as products of mass-transfer binary (MTB) evolution. The dozen examples now known span a wide range of evolutionary histories, ages, and abundances. These stars can already...
متن کاملDecline and Fall of Activity with Age
Ages for the components of binary stars are calculated from measurements of their chromospheric activity using the HK spectrophotometer at Mount Wil-son Observatory. Binaries are useful for age calibration because bright open clusters spanning the entire solar Main Sequence lifetime are not readily available, and also because age determinations using moving groups are comparatively uncertain ow...
